The bird icon was an important and wide spread
motif in pre-historic North America.
The Mississippian Indian culture (A.D. 700-1200)
used the image of birds and bird/men on their
various sacred objects and also in their rock art.
The bird symbol on our pendant and earring
designs are a reproduction of an actual
Mississippian culture motif.
While visiting an archeology dig in Southern
Illinois, I witnessed the unearthing of a small
pottery fragment bearing this design. The ancient
falconoid image was made with a coil of clay and
applied to the surface of a pottery vessel long ago.
The simplistic lines, delicate form and unique
posture of the bird inspired us to recreate it in
sterling silver. The circle is approximately 3/4"
diameter. The sterling silver figaro chain is 18"
long.
